Typhoon Yangliu Set to Bring Strong Winds and Heavy Rain Across Taiwan

August 12, 2025

The Central Weather Agency (CWA) has expanded its maritime typhoon warning as Typhoon Yangliu advances toward Taiwan, now covering the southern Taiwan Strait, the eastern half of the island, and the Bashi Channel. CWA Weather Forecast Center Section Chief Liu Yuqi urged vessels in affected waters to closely monitor the storm’s progress.

A land-based typhoon warning is expected to be issued this afternoon, with the first alerts likely for Hualien, Taitung, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung. “All areas will feel the direct effects tomorrow, so preparations should be made today,” Liu said.

As of this morning, Yangliu was located about 660 kilometers southeast of Taitung, maintaining its classification as a moderate typhoon while tracking west-northwest. The storm’s eye is forecast to approach Taiwan’s southeastern and southern coastal waters by tomorrow morning, with landfall projected near noon before crossing into the Taiwan Strait by evening. The strongest impact is expected during daylight hours tomorrow, followed by its movement toward southern China late tomorrow night into Thursday morning, bringing peak conditions to Kinmen.

Wind and rain are expected to intensify gradually from tomorrow. Current coastal waves are relatively low but are predicted to rise to 4 meters along most coastlines and exceed 6 meters in eastern and southeastern coastal areas near the storm’s center. The CWA forecasts widespread heavy to torrential rainfall across the eastern half of Taiwan, southern areas from Chiayi downward, and Penghu. Hualien, Taitung, and mountainous areas in the south may see the heaviest downpours, while other regions will experience intermittent rain.

Strong wind advisories remain in effect for land areas, with gusts potentially reaching Force 8 across Taiwan and surrounding islands. Taitung, Green Island, and Orchid Island could see gusts surpassing Force 14 as the typhoon nears. Eastern Taiwan will feel the winds first tomorrow morning, followed by strengthening conditions across western regions in the afternoon and evening.

Yangliu is expected to leave Taiwan’s vicinity by Thursday, though Kinmen may continue to experience strong winds and heavy rain into the early morning before conditions improve. The CWA advises the public to avoid mountainous and coastal areas, secure loose outdoor items, and stay informed through official weather updates.
