The Central Weather Agency (CWA) announced that Typhoon Podul is expected to make landfall in eastern Taiwan tomorrow, prompting the issuance of sea and land typhoon warnings at 2:30 p.m. today.
According to the latest CWA forecast released at 1 p.m., heavy rains and strong winds will likely meet the criteria for suspending work and classes in several areas. The affected regions include the mountainous areas of Chiayi County, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Hualien, and Taitung, as well as Orchid Island and Green Island.
The forecast indicates that in the next 24 hours, mountainous regions in Chiayi County, Kaohsiung, Hualien, and Taitung may experience rainfall levels sufficient to trigger suspension rules. Strong winds meeting official thresholds are also expected in Pingtung, Hualien, Taitung, and the offshore islands mentioned.
Under Taiwan’s Regulations on Suspension of Work and School Due to Natural Disasters, work and class cancellations may be declared if a typhoon’s gale radius is expected to affect an area within four hours, with sustained winds of at least force 7 or gusts reaching force 10, or if 24-hour rainfall totals reach 200 mm in mountainous areas or 350 mm in plains. However, the final decision rests with local governments, which may also consider the likelihood or occurrence of disasters.
Authorities are urging residents in affected regions to stay alert for updates and to prepare for potential disruptions tomorrow.
