Recall Fails for Three Taichung City Councilors as Vote Count Concludes

TAICHUNG, Taiwan — July 26, 2025 — The Taichung Election Commission has officially concluded the vote counting for the recall motions against three city councilors, with all 777 polling stations completing their tallies. Despite a voter turnout of 56.8%, none of the recall efforts met the required thresholds for removal from office.

Fourth electoral district councilor Liao Weixiang received 83,812 votes in favor of the recall and 106,534 votes against, with a voter turnout of 56.66%. This translates to 44.03% support and 55.97% opposition, falling short of the required threshold.

Fifth district councilor Huang Jianhao garnered 88,914 yes votes and 119,540 no votes, with 42.65% in favor and 57.35% opposed. His district recorded a voter turnout of 55.95%.

Sixth district councilor Luo Tingwei, who had the highest percentage of votes supporting the recall, obtained 74,012 in favor and 86,422 against, with a voter turnout of 58.14%. While 46.13% voted in favor, and his recall support technically surpassed the legal threshold, the Election Commission clarified that the recall still did not succeed.

The commission also reported the number of invalid ballots: 991 in Central 4, 976 in Central 5, and 871 in Central 6.
