Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued a tsunami watch on Wednesday morning following a massive earthquake off the eastern coast of Russia.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) initially recorded the quake at magnitude 8.0, striking near the Kamchatka Peninsula at approximately 7:25 a.m. Taiwan time. The tremor was later revised to a magnitude 8.8, according to updated reports.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency also responded by elevating its tsunami advisory to a full warning, with waves as high as three meters anticipated along its Pacific-facing coastal regions. Japanese authorities are calling on residents in low-lying coastal zones to evacuate immediately to safer, higher ground.
In Taiwan, officials are monitoring developments closely. The CWA’s tsunami watch remains in effect as of this writing, with emergency services on standby.
Meanwhile, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has noted that the tremor could generate tsunami waves across multiple areas in the Pacific basin, placing locations such as Hawaii and Alaska under a tsunami watch as well.
Authorities across the region are urging the public to remain alert and follow updates from official sources.
