July 30, 2025 – Miaoli, Taiwan
Continuous heavy rainfall brought by southwesterly winds has caused multiple landslides in the mountainous regions of Nanzhuang and Tai’an Townships in Miaoli County, disrupting traffic and posing risks to local residents.
According to local authorities, several mountain roads were rendered impassable due to landslides, with slopes collapsing and blocking routes with earth, rocks, and fallen trees. The Miaoli County Police Department, village chiefs, and volunteers quickly responded to restore partial access.
Deputy Chief Wu Guowei of the Toufen Precinct reported that the Nanzhuang Police Station received a distress call on the night of July 29. A landslide had occurred approximately 500 meters from Donghe Village toward Xiangtian Lake, prompting immediate dispatch of officers led by Deputy Chief Qiu Hongren. Upon arrival, they implemented temporary traffic controls to prevent accidents while local government units began clearing operations early the next morning.
In Tai’an Township, the Da’an Link Road, a vital access route to the Xiangbi, Meiyuan, and Shilin villages, was also severely damaged. A passing motorist narrowly escaped harm after witnessing a torrent of mud, rocks, and uprooted trees rushing down the slope. The driver reversed immediately and avoided disaster.
Yang Huifu, head of Xiangbi Village, shared that upon learning of the roadblock, he coordinated with fellow village leaders and officers from the Da’an Police Station. With the help of nearby residents, they used chainsaws to cut down trees and cleared debris, managing to open a single lane for two-way traffic.
As of today, limited traffic has resumed on some affected routes. Authorities are urging motorists to drive cautiously, as weather conditions remain unstable.
The Miaoli County Police Department reminds the public to stay informed through official weather updates and report any signs of falling rocks or unstable terrain. They also emphasize the importance of prioritizing personal safety while reporting such hazards to local offices or police stations.
