Tainan City Suspends Work and Classes Amid Torrential Rain and Severe Flooding

TAIWAN – August 2, 2025 — Tainan City officials announced the suspension of work and classes on Saturday as relentless rainfall triggered widespread flooding and prompted a severe weather alert from the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

The intensified southwest monsoon has brought unstable atmospheric conditions, resulting in brief but intense downpours across southern Taiwan. At 5:34 a.m., the CWA issued a severe thunderstorm alert, warning of possible lightning strikes, flash floods, and water accumulation in low-lying areas—especially in the East, South, and North districts of Tainan.

Multiple districts in Tainan have already experienced significant flooding. In the North District, floodwaters surged to 60 centimeters deep along Lane 560, Section 1 of Anzhong Road, prompting authorities to install barricades to control water flow. Other affected areas include Changxi Road, Gongxue Road, and the Xiaodong Road underpass, which has been temporarily closed for safety.

In the West Central District, cars were partially submerged as water rose to mid-vehicle height in the Xiaoximen area, reflecting the severity of the downpour.

Beyond Tainan, mountainous regions in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and parts of Chiayi and Nantou counties are also under heavy rain advisories. Taitung County’s mountainous zones may experience similar extreme weather.

Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) projected that the southwest monsoon will begin to weaken and shift northward by Tuesday. Although rainfall is expected to taper off, the public—particularly those in central and southern Taiwan—should remain on alert for sudden, localized downpours and possible flooding in the coming days.

Local officials continue to monitor the weather closely and urge residents to follow emergency updates and prioritize safety.
