House Urges Senate to Respect Legal Process in VP Duterte Impeachment Case

MANILA, Philippines – August 3, 2025 — The House of Representatives has voiced serious concern over reports that the Senate may vote on the Supreme Court’s ruling related to the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte—without waiting for the House to exhaust its legal remedies.

House Spokesperson Atty. Princess Abante emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision is not yet final, and the House intends to file a Motion for Reconsideration (MR), as it holds the exclusive constitutional authority to initiate and handle impeachment proceedings.

“We express deep concern over reports that the Senate may vote to act on the Supreme Court decision regarding the impeachment case against the Vice President without waiting for the House of Representatives to exhaust its available legal remedies,” Abante stated.

She stressed that the issue is not merely procedural but involves constitutional rights and institutional integrity. The House, she added, has identified factual inconsistencies in the Supreme Court’s conclusions, which warrant further review.

Abante warned that should the Senate proceed without awaiting the outcome of the House’s MR, it could be interpreted as a disregard for due process. She cautioned against what she described as a “premature move” to vote on abandoning the impeachment trial, calling it a potential “political shortcut” that undermines the constitutional role of the House.

“This could sideline the mandate of the House and compromise the integrity of the entire impeachment process,” she said, underlining the need to uphold the principles of democracy and the system of checks and balances.

The House called on the Senate to exercise patience and allow the judicial process to unfold fully, ensuring that the issue is resolved lawfully and with institutional respect.

“The House remains committed to the rule of law and will exhaust all legal remedies to protect its constitutional mandate and to ensure that accountability is not casually brushed aside,” Abante concluded.
