Xiaomi Recalls Nearly 147,000 Power Banks in China Over Fire Risk

Beijing – August 31 – Xiaomi has announced a proactive recall of 146,891 units of its PB2030MI power bank manufactured between August 1 and September 22, 2024, after identifying a potential fire hazard linked to defective battery cells supplied by a third-party manufacturer.

According to a notice posted by the Beijing Municipal Administration for Market Regulation, Xiaomi explained that a small number of devices may overheat under certain conditions, creating a risk of combustion. To address the issue, the company has launched a voluntary recall program, offering consumers full refunds of RMB 159 (around NT$680). Customers can confirm whether their product is affected by checking the recall announcement on Xiaomi Mall’s website or by contacting customer service directly.

The PB2030MI power bank has already been removed from Xiaomi’s official China website. However, the same model—marketed in Taiwan as the “Xiaomi Power Bank 20000 33W with Built-in Cable”—remains available for purchase at NT$695 on Xiaomi Taiwan’s online store and other e-commerce platforms. As of press time, no recall notice has been issued in Taiwan.

This recall comes amid broader concerns about battery safety in power banks. Earlier this year, multiple Chinese brands were forced to withdraw products over fire hazards linked to problematic battery cells manufactured by Amprius (Wuxi).

In response, Xiaomi disclosed that it has filed a lawsuit against Amprius, seeking compensation for financial damages caused by the defective materials. This marks the first time a major electronics brand has publicly taken legal action against the supplier following widespread recalls.

Consumers affected by the recall are advised to stop using the product immediately and apply for returns through official Xiaomi channels.
