September 9, 2025 – Taichung, Taiwan
Authorities in Taichung have arrested a 26-year-old Filipino migrant worker accused of murdering a local man in Tanzi District. The suspect, who had been living in Taiwan without legal status after escaping from his employer, was taken into custody yesterday (Sept. 8).
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 7, along Fengxing Road in Tanzi. Police said a 41-year-old man surnamed Li was discovered lying in a pool of blood with fatal stab wounds, reportedly inflicted with a fruit knife. Passersby who found him immediately alerted the authorities.
The Taichung District Prosecutor’s Office quickly assigned Prosecutor Wei Peihua to lead the investigation. A special task force, formed in coordination with the Daya Police Precinct, carried out evidence collection, reviewed surveillance footage, and traced the victim’s recent movements. Their efforts led to the identification of the Filipino suspect, who was captured within 24 hours of the crime.
Following the arrest, prosecutors confirmed that the suspect faces charges of murder under Article 271, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code. Since the offense carries a minimum penalty of five years in prison and there are strong concerns about flight risk and possible tampering with evidence, prosecutors petitioned the Taichung District Court for his detention.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the precise cause of Li’s death. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation.
