The Central Weather Agency (CWA) reported that Taiwan will see mostly cloudy to sunny skies today (Sept. 9). However, localized short-term thunderstorms are expected this afternoon in western regions and in the mountainous areas of eastern Taiwan. Forecasters also cautioned that heavy rainfall could occur in mountain areas, along with sudden severe weather such as downpours, lightning strikes, and strong gusts. Officials advised the public to carry rain gear when going out.
Heatwave Conditions
Temperatures are forecast to generally range between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius, with some parts of Greater Taipei, central and southern Taiwan, and Hualien likely to exceed 36 degrees. The CWA urged residents to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during peak hours of heat.
Air Quality
Air quality is rated “good” in Hsinchu–Miaoli, central Taiwan, Yunlin–Chiayi–Tainan, Kaohsiung–Pingtung, Yilan, eastern Taiwan, as well as in the offshore islands of Matsu, Kinmen, and Penghu. The northern region, however, is at a “fair” level.
Weekly Outlook
From Wednesday (Sept. 10) through Sunday (Sept. 14), Taiwan is expected to experience stable weather with mostly cloudy to sunny skies. Brief afternoon thunderstorms may still occur in western Taiwan and mountainous regions. Low temperatures are forecast to range from 25 to 27 degrees Celsius in Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu. Daytime highs will reach 34 to 35 degrees in the west, and 32 to 33 degrees in the east and offshore islands.
