MANILA — July 9, 2025 — Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa announced on Tuesday that the Duterte bloc in the Senate is throwing its support behind Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero, affirming his continued leadership amid ongoing discussions in the upper chamber.
“Nakapag-commit na kami,” Dela Rosa told reporters, confirming that the group—composed of seven lawmakers—has reached a consensus to back Escudero.
The Duterte-aligned bloc includes:
-
Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa
-
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go
-
Senator Robin Padilla
-
Senator Imee Marcos
-
Senator Mark Villar
-
Senator Camille Villar
-
Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta
Dela Rosa noted that he had already signed a resolution of support for Escudero’s leadership, although he could not confirm whether the other members had formally done the same.
Asked specifically about Senator Imee Marcos, Dela Rosa admitted he wasn’t sure if she had spoken personally with Escudero but emphasized that within their group, the general sentiment was aligned.
“I don’t know kung nag-usap na sila personally, pero in principle, kami sa Duterte bloc, napag-usapan namin—we are inclined to support Chiz,” he said.
This development comes amid behind-the-scenes maneuvering and realignments in the Senate as various blocs position themselves ahead of the next legislative session. The backing of the Duterte bloc could provide Escudero a crucial boost in consolidating support across political factions.
So far, Escudero has maintained steady control of the chamber following his assumption of the Senate presidency in May, but continued loyalty from key allies will be critical in ensuring legislative momentum.
