TAIPEI, July 1 – The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued a weather update forecasting intense heat across Taiwan through Friday (July 5). According to forecaster Chang Cheng-chuan, daytime temperatures may soar to 37°C in parts of northern, central, and southern Taiwan, as well as in Hualien and Kinmen. In addition, afternoon thunderstorms are expected in southern Taiwan and mountainous regions, especially south of Chiayi.
Tropical Activity Monitored in the Pacific
In terms of tropical systems, Chang reported that a weather disturbance designated 99W has developed into a tropical depression in the western Pacific Ocean. Although it’s currently moving northward, early assessments suggest that this system is unlikely to directly impact Taiwan.
However, more attention is being given to a separate low-pressure system forming in the waters east of the Philippines. This area of disturbance may intensify into a tropical depression within the next day or two, and could potentially strengthen into a typhoon by the end of the week.
Uncertainty in Typhoon Path
While the system is currently projected to head toward southern Japan, Chang emphasized that the storm’s track remains uncertain. If the system enters the “saddle field”—a region where steering currents are weak—its path could become highly unpredictable, increasing the likelihood of it approaching Taiwan during its northward movement.
Weekly Weather Outlook
From Tuesday to Friday (July 2–5), weather conditions across Taiwan are expected to remain largely consistent, with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. The eastern half of the island and the Hengchun Peninsula may see occasional short-term showers, while afternoon thunderstorms are likely in the southern and mountainous areas.
Stay Alert for High Temperatures and Local Storms
Daytime temperatures will continue to hover at dangerously high levels throughout the week. Apart from Taipei and the northern region, other parts of Taiwan, including central and southern areas, Hualien, and Kinmen, may also experience localized highs around 37°C. The public is advised to stay hydrated, avoid extended exposure to the sun, and remain cautious of sudden downpours and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoons.
The Central Weather Administration continues to monitor both the heat wave and tropical developments closely. Citizens are encouraged to follow official updates for any changes in forecast or potential severe weather advisories.
