Taichung Sees Sharp Drop in Intersection Accidents as Police Step Up Road Safety Measures

TAICHUNG, July 13 — The Taichung City Police Department has reported a significant decrease in traffic accidents at the city’s 100 most accident-prone intersections, thanks to enhanced prevention strategies targeting high-risk road users such as drunk drivers, large vehicles, and motorcyclists.

Among the intersections showing notable improvement is the junction of Defang South Road and Huanzhong East Road in Dali District, which saw a drop of 26 cases—a reduction of over 70% compared to the same period last year.

The department’s Traffic Brigade said it conducts annual reviews of the city’s most dangerous intersections, using data to analyze accident trends and root causes. Collision heat maps are used to pinpoint exact locations and types of accidents. These insights guide targeted improvements under the “3E” policy—Education, Engineering, and Enforcement—allowing for adaptive and practical responses.

Statistics from National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) support the department’s findings, showing a 33.34% decrease in accidents at the top 100 intersections during the first half of this year. Other intersections that have seen a sharp decline include Zhongqing Road and Wuquan Road in Beitun District (down by 24 cases, or 58.54%) and Chongde Road and Taiyuan Road, also in Beitun (down by 21 cases, or 55.26%).

NCTU also announced the launch of its “Traffic Accident Reduction Implementation Plan,” which aims to address recurring issues involving vulnerable road users. These include pedestrians, the elderly, youth, motorcyclists, and those driving under the influence. The plan involves analyzing patterns of collisions and introducing tailored law enforcement and infrastructure solutions to minimize casualties.

The university’s analysis revealed that peak accident times are typically between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., with common causes being unsafe following distances, drivers failing to yield during turns, and distracted or inattentive driving. Intersections during rush hours are particularly prone to rear-end collisions due to heavy traffic flow and aggressive maneuvers.

To build on these improvements, the police will continue to monitor high-risk intersections closely, conduct rolling safety audits, and enhance patrol presence. Focused enforcement will target violations like drunk driving and pedestrian safety infractions, as part of the broader campaign to ensure a safer road environment for Taichung residents.

Authorities also plan to expand public education through media and online platforms to raise awareness of road safety and encourage responsible driving behavior.
