Perci Cendaña of Akbayan Wants Supreme Court Justices Held Accountable Over VP Sara Ruling

MANILA — Representative Perci Cendaña is calling for accountability among Supreme Court justices following their recent decision on the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.

In a strongly worded statement, Cendaña criticized the High Court for allegedly siding with the interests of the Duterte family rather than upholding the principles of justice and independence.

“Our justices chose to serve the interests of the Dutertes and shield the VP from accountability,” Cendaña said. “Filipinos deserve an independent Supreme Court and should hold the court accountable if it falls short of that. Betrayal of public trust has consequences — even the justices may face impeachment.”

Cendaña’s remarks come after the Supreme Court declared the impeachment complaint against Vice President Duterte as unconstitutional, citing the one-year bar rule and due process.

He expressed concern that the judiciary, which is expected to remain impartial, may be compromised if left unchecked. He also hinted at the possibility of filing impeachment complaints against the justices involved.

As of this writing, the Supreme Court has not yet issued a response to Cendaña’s statements.
