Taipei Mayor Urges Typhoon Preparations as Strong Winds Expected This Afternoon

TAIPEI (8/13/2025)– With Typhoon Podul nearing Taiwan, Taipei City remains outside the current land warning area, and work and classes continue as scheduled today. However, Mayor Chiang Wan-an issued a reminder this morning for residents to brace for strengthening winds later in the day.

Speaking at a public event, Chiang noted that forecasts indicate wind speeds in Taipei will pick up from the afternoon, though current conditions do not meet the threshold for suspending classes or work. He emphasized the need for precautionary measures, urging all sectors to stay alert.

The mayor directed city departments to remind businesses—especially those with high-altitude or outdoor operations—to prioritize safety. He advised halting such work when necessary and maintaining communication with meteorological authorities.

Chiang also called on the public to inspect and secure potentially hazardous items, such as advertising boards, scaffolding, and tower cranes at construction sites, to prevent accidents in high winds.

Regarding possible schedule changes, Chiang said that after discussions with Keelung, New Taipei, and Taoyuan officials last night, all cities agreed to keep classes open today. While there are no current plans for suspension, he assured residents that the situation is being monitored closely and updates will be provided if conditions worsen.
