BSP Defends 48-Hour Compliance Period for Wallet Apps in Crackdown on Illegal Online Gambling

MANILA (8/14/2025) – Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan confirmed before the Senate Committee on Games and Amusement that e-wallet operators were given 48 hours to comply with directives related to the removal of links tied to illegal online gambling.

The timeline was questioned by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, who pointed out that the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) had assured the capability to take down such links within the same day.

Cayetano stressed that regulators should not wait for legislative hearings before acting and urged the BSP to move faster in imposing strict measures against unlawful online betting.

In response, the BSP explained that the two-day compliance window was intended to give all e-wallet providers ample time to ensure complete removal of prohibited links and to inform their users accordingly.

Despite this, Cayetano maintained that immediate action is crucial to prevent more people from falling victim to illegal gambling activities.
