A shocking incident unfolded at a national vocational high school in Yilan County yesterday when a 2nd-year male student suddenly attacked a classmate with a fruit knife inside the classroom.
The attack occurred around 10:50 a.m. during the third class of the day. According to police reports, the suspect stood up while the teacher was writing on the blackboard, pulled out a knife he had hidden, and stabbed a male classmate seated behind him twice in the back. The victim, unable to dodge, began bleeding heavily, causing panic among classmates who screamed for help.
Emergency responders rushed the victim to the hospital, where doctors found two puncture wounds on his upper left back, each about two centimeters deep. He has since been stabilized and remains under observation, but his injuries are not life-threatening.
Dispute Escalated from Online Quarrel
Investigators revealed that the assailant and the victim were former junior high school classmates and had been close before tensions arose. A playful exchange between the two recently turned into a quarrel that escalated online. Authorities believe this lingering grudge led the suspect to bring a knife to school.
The suspect was immediately detained and handed over to police. After questioning, the case was referred to the juvenile court on charges of attempted murder, intimidation, and violations of the Juvenile Case Handling Act. A judge has since ordered his detention.
Victim’s Family to Pursue Charges
The victim’s family stated that their son had been threatened by the suspect just a week earlier and expressed outrage that the school violence was not prevented. They have vowed to pursue attempted murder charges.
School and Community Response
Dozens of students witnessed the stabbing, leaving some emotionally shaken. The school administration has activated emergency counseling measures and promised additional support to help students cope with the trauma and remain focused on their studies.
Authorities continue to investigate the exact motive behind the incident and are urging vigilance in preventing similar acts of campus violence.
