MANILA, Philippines — Members of the Akbayan Party-list, along with Dinagat Islands Representative Kaka Bag-ao, made a bold statement during the opening of the 20th Congress on Monday by wearing peach-colored ribbons as a symbol of their call to continue the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Akbayan Representatives Chel Diokno, Perci Cendaña, Dadah Kiram Ismula, and Rep. Bag-ao were seen donning the peach ribbons, which they described as a sign of their commitment to accountability and due process. The gesture comes in response to the recent ruling by the Supreme Court declaring the Articles of Impeachment against the Vice President as unconstitutional.
Despite the ruling, the lawmakers expressed concern over what they view as a missed opportunity for checks and balances in government. “The impeachment process is a constitutional mechanism meant to hold the highest officials accountable,” said Rep. Cendaña in a brief statement.
The peach ribbon, historically associated with impeachment campaigns, was used as a visual reminder of their stand. Akbayan emphasized that their actions reflect a continued belief in the rule of law and transparency in public service.
The Supreme Court’s decision has sparked mixed reactions across political lines, with some supporting the move to preserve constitutional clarity, while others see it as a blow to democratic accountability.
