Taiwan’s Taitung County Announces Islandwide Work and School Suspension Due to Typhoon
October 23, 2026
Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan announced a countywide suspension of work and classes early Friday morning, October 23, as Typhoon Chiangmi brought strong winds and hazardous weather to the region.
The Taitung County Government issued the announcement shortly before 6 a.m., reversing its earlier decision to suspend work and classes only in Orchid Island and Green Island while allowing other areas of the county to operate normally.
Taitung Revises Suspension Decision Early Friday
The change came after strong winds swept through Taitung overnight as the typhoon affected Taiwan.
On Thursday, the county government initially announced that only Orchid Island and Green Island would suspend work and classes on Friday, while the rest of Taitung County would continue normal operations.
This decision meant that Taitung was the only county or city on Taiwan’s main island initially scheduled to maintain regular work and school activities, according to the report.
The announcement prompted widespread criticism from residents, with many expressing their frustration on the Facebook page of Taitung County Magistrate Jao Ching-ling.
Following the overnight deterioration in weather conditions, the county government changed its decision early Friday, extending the suspension to the entire county.
The revised announcement means that work and classes are suspended throughout Taitung County for October 23.
Residents are advised to monitor official county government announcements for further updates and follow safety instructions as the typhoon continues to affect the area.
