Typhoon Bavi Brings Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Across Taiwan as Storm Makes Landfall Threat
Taipei, Taiwan – July 11, 2026 — Moderate Typhoon Bavi continues to affect Taiwan, with the Central Weather Administration (CWA) maintaining both sea and land typhoon warnings as the storm’s circulation spreads across northern, northeastern, and eastern parts of the island.
As of 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, the center of Typhoon Bavi was located approximately 360 kilometers east-southeast of Taipei, moving northwest at around 27 kilometers per hour. The storm’s circulation has already reached parts of Taiwan, prompting authorities to urge residents to remain alert for dangerous weather conditions.
Land Warning Expanded Across Multiple Regions
The CWA said Typhoon Bavi currently poses a threat to areas north of Changhua, Nantou County, eastern Taiwan, and the Matsu Islands.
The land warning includes the following areas:
- New Taipei City
- Keelung City
- Taipei City
- Taoyuan City
- Hsinchu City and Hsinchu County
- Miaoli County
- Taichung City
- Changhua County
- Nantou County
- Yilan County
- Hualien County
- Taitung County
- Lienchiang County (Matsu)
Saturday Expected to Bring the Worst Weather
According to the weather bureau, Saturday is expected to experience the most severe impacts from Typhoon Bavi, with widespread heavy rain and strong winds affecting much of Taiwan.
Heavy rain or torrential downpours are likely in many areas, with the greatest risk of extremely heavy rainfall forecast for northern Taiwan, Yilan County, and the mountainous regions of central Taiwan.
Officials urged residents to closely monitor weather updates, prepare for possible flooding and landslides, and avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm.
High Temperatures Continue in Eastern Taiwan
Despite the storm, Hualien and Taitung are expected to remain hot due to sinking air associated with the typhoon’s circulation, with daytime temperatures reaching 33°C to 34°C.
The Huatung Valley and Kinmen may experience foehn winds, pushing temperatures above 36°C in some locations. Residents in these areas are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged outdoor activities.
Elsewhere in Taiwan, increased cloud cover and rainfall are expected to keep daytime temperatures between 28°C and 31°C.
Dangerous Coastal Conditions
The CWA also warned of hazardous sea conditions, with long-period waves expected along the northern and eastern coastlines, including Orchid Island (Lanyu), Green Island, the Hengchun Peninsula, and the Matsu Islands.
Wave heights around Taiwan are forecast to exceed 3 meters, while coastal areas in northern and eastern Taiwan could experience waves higher than 6 meters.
Authorities strongly advised the public to stay away from beaches, rocky shorelines, ports, and other coastal areas until conditions improve.
Weather to Improve Gradually After the Weekend
Forecasters expect Typhoon Bavi to gradually move away from Taiwan on Sunday, although unstable weather will continue to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms, particularly across western Taiwan and Taitung.
From next week, abundant moisture is expected to remain over the region, bringing periodic rain and afternoon thunderstorms. Southern Taiwan, eastern Taiwan, and mountainous areas are expected to continue seeing localized heavy rainfall, especially during the afternoon hours.
Officials continue to advise residents to follow the latest forecasts, prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions, and comply with local government safety advisories while Typhoon Bavi remains near Taiwan.
