TAIPEI (September 20, 2025)– A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was recorded off Taiwan’s west coast early Saturday morning, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) confirmed.
The quake struck at 6:56 a.m., with its epicenter located in the Taiwan Strait, roughly 93.9 kilometers east of Kinmen County Hall. It occurred at a depth of 17.2 kilometers beneath the seabed, according to CWA data.
No immediate reports of injuries or damage were received following the tremor.
Seismic intensity readings placed Kinmen, Penghu, Changhua, Yunlin, and Chiayi at level 2 on Taiwan’s seven-tier intensity scale. Lighter shaking at level 1 was reported in several other areas, including Matsu, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Nantou, Taichung, and Tainan.
Taiwan, located along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent earthquakes, though many are moderate and cause little or no damage.
