Manila, Philippines — July 17, 2025 — Authorities from the Bureau of Customs (BOC) at the Manila International Container Port intercepted nearly ₱750 million worth of illegal drugs concealed in balikbayan boxes shipped from the United States.
During an inspection, customs personnel discovered more than 100 kilograms of shabu (crystal meth) hidden inside four balikbayan boxes. The boxes were falsely declared to contain personal items, such as cornflakes, potato chips, soup, and other household goods.
According to the BOC, this method of smuggling marks a significant shift from previous attempts, which primarily involved marijuana. The agency suspects that drug syndicates are now exploring new strategies to bypass authorities, using balikbayan boxes to smuggle more dangerous substances into the country.
“The use of balikbayan boxes for shabu smuggling is a disturbing development,” said BOC officials. “This cannot be tolerated and must be addressed with the full force of the law.”
Authorities are currently preparing multiple charges against individuals suspected to be behind the illicit shipment. Investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible.
The Bureau of Customs reiterated its commitment to tightening security and surveillance at all entry points, and reminded the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
