Tainan, July 7 — In the wake of Typhoon Danas’ powerful impact, around 100,000 households in Tainan remained without electricity as of 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening. Severe flooding and storm damage have left many areas in need of extensive cleanup and recovery efforts.
Earlier in the day, the Tainan City Government announced the suspension of work and classes on July 8 in nine districts: Yanshui, Dongshan, Houbi, Baihe, Beimen, Jiangjun, Xuejia, Qigu, and Xigang. However, this decision sparked concern and frustration among residents in other affected areas, particularly Xinying and Jiali, where the effects of the typhoon have also been severe.
City Councillor Wang Xuanmao criticized the initial decision, pointing out that many northern districts of Tainan, including Xinying and Liuying, were still experiencing widespread power outages. In some locations, power has been down for more than 24 hours, and road repairs are still ongoing. He expressed disbelief that such hard-hit areas were not initially included in the list of suspended districts, urging the city government to reevaluate the situation based on real-time damage assessments.

In response to growing public pressure and calls for fairness, the city government updated its announcement, adding seven more districts to the suspension list. These include Jiali, Madou, Liujia, Xiaying, Guantian, Xinying, and Liuying.
With the latest update, a total of 16 out of Tainan’s 37 administrative districts will now observe a suspension of work and classes on July 8, as recovery operations continue throughout the city. Local authorities have pledged to remain vigilant and responsive as the post-typhoon recovery progresses.
