DOJ Probes Deeper Ties Between E-Sabong Disappearances and Drug War Killings

Manila, July 19, 2025 — The Department of Justice (DOJ) revealed that it is intensifying its investigation into possible links between the disappearance of several e-sabong (online cockfighting) personalities and the government’s previous anti-drug campaign.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla confirmed that the department is currently examining critical details that suggest an intersection between the cases of missing sabungeros and the violent operations that marked the controversial “war on drugs.”

While Remulla previously acknowledged a potential connection between the two, he emphasized the need for a more thorough and methodical investigation. “There is indeed an intersection between these issues,” he said. “But we must examine all relevant developments over the years, beyond just the cases of missing cockfighting personalities.”

Arrests Point to Possible Link

The Justice Secretary also referred to the recent arrest of two individuals in Meycauayan, Bulacan for alleged involvement in illegal drugs. These suspects are reportedly tied to the ongoing investigation into the disappearances connected to e-sabong operations.

According to Remulla, emerging evidence suggests that the same groups allegedly responsible for extrajudicial killings during the height of the anti-drug campaign could be behind the series of abductions. He also hinted at the involvement of certain officials, although he withheld specific names or positions, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing probe.

Expanding the Scope of Investigation

Remulla stressed that the investigation is no longer limited to the 34 known cases of missing e-sabong personalities. The DOJ is now considering other unsolved disappearances that may be related, especially those that occurred during the peak of the drug war.

“This is not just about e-sabong anymore,” Remulla stated. “We are expanding the scope to include other possible victims of forced disappearances in past years.”

Despite growing public pressure, the DOJ chief clarified that the investigation will not be rushed. “We are following a systematic process in our case buildup,” he said, adding that the department is committed to ensuring justice through a comprehensive and credible inquiry.

The revelations come as human rights advocates and families of the missing victims continue to demand answers and accountability. The DOJ’s latest move signals a broader effort to uncover the truth behind a string of unresolved cases that have haunted the country’s justice system for years.
