Typhoon Bavi Approaches Taiwan, Keelung Closes Beaches and Postpones Events

Typhoon Bavi Prompts Coastal Closures and Event Postponements in Keelung, Taiwan

Keelung City, Taiwan (July 9, 2026)— As Typhoon Bavi approaches northern Taiwan, Keelung City has implemented precautionary safety measures due to the expected arrival of dangerous coastal conditions, including powerful waves, strong swells, and intense wind gusts.

The Keelung City Government announced that several popular coastal areas will be temporarily closed starting at 5:00 p.m. today as a preventive measure. The affected locations include Dawulun Beach, Haixing Swimming Pool, and the Chaojing Marine Conservation Area, where all water-related recreational activities will be suspended until conditions improve.

Authorities also confirmed that all scheduled trips to Keelung Islet have been canceled, with boat services temporarily suspended to ensure public safety.

The city’s Department of Economic Affairs and Development said that coastal management teams will strengthen patrols and safety monitoring during the typhoon. Fishermen and boat operators have been reminded to complete preparations, including securing vessels, reinforcing anchor systems, and taking necessary measures to prevent storm-related damage.

Several weekend events in Keelung have also been canceled or postponed due to Typhoon Bavi. The “Multicultural Groups Love Keelung and Energy Saving Promotion Concert,” originally scheduled for July 11, will now be held on August 23 at the Keelung Performing Arts Center.

Meanwhile, the “Squid Guided Market” event, part of the Keelung Squid Festival activities scheduled for July 11 and 12 at Guomen Square, has been postponed. The Water Recreation Season activities at Nuannuan Waterfront Park will also temporarily suspend operations during the affected dates.

Officials are urging residents and visitors to remain alert, avoid coastal areas, and follow government safety announcements as Typhoon Bavi continues to move toward Taiwan.
